NEW DELHI, India, Jan. 24, Reuter: Six policemen who tortured a pregnant woman and made her parade naked before killing her husband and two other men were sentenced to death on Saturday by a North Indian court.

The court heard that Maya Tyagi was five months pregnant when police stopped her and her husband as they were on their way to a wedding party in the town of Baghport with two other men, the United News of India news agency said.

The policemen ordered Tyagi to strip, shooting the three men when they tried to protest.

Tyagi had to undergo an abortion after the police torture, which the Judge described as “Most shameful and savage’.

Four other policemen were given life sentences for their part in the June, 1980, incident, which created uproar among Indian Women’s Organizations.

The trial, in a district court in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh State, lasted a year.
