CLOMBO, May 1, Reuter: Police fired shots in the air and used tear gas to disperse a crowd attempting to march through the streets of Colombo in defiance of a government ban on May Day rallies.
Witnesses said police acted when 1,500 people belonging to four leftist parties tried to march to a park to hold a rally.
