CHANDIGARH: After the recent amendment of the National Security act the police have been armed with vast powers which earlier rested in the judiciary. This diversion and diluting of the powers have created bitterness between executive and judiciary.

This issue was raised by the newsmen at a press conference of the state police chief Mr. J.P. Ribeiro at Chandigarh. Mr., Ribiro tried to minimize the effect of this issue by saying that the amended powers will strengthen the police force in curbing violence in the state.

The newsmen asked the Director General state police about the registration of a case of treason against Prof Darshan Singh. They enquired why Prof Darshan Singh ‘was not being arrested? Mr. Ribeiro evasive reply that Prof. Darshan Singh’s life was in danger with constant threats from the militants could not satisfy the press people.

Referring to a news report that militants had a helicopter and mortor launcher the police chief described it as baseless and with foundation.
