NEW DELHI: Chandra Shekhar has said his minority Janata Dal (S) government will last as long as it has the support of parliament adding there was no misunderstanding between his party and the Congress (I).

In an interview to Gulf Times he said as the Congress (I) am supporting the government it has majority in parliament.

On Punjab Chandra Shekhar said there cannot be an instant formula to solve the strife-torn States’ problem adding that militancy is not solved by formulas but by a compassionate accommodative sympathetic approach.

He said that there could be no instant formula by the government but it should be one which was acceptable to all.

On the Gulf war the prime minister said restoring peace in the region depends upon the response from all quarters and unless and until President Saddam Hussein of Iraq also does not respond positively we feel that there will be no positive reaction from the other side. Chandra Shekhar said that India took the initiative on behalf of the nonaligned movement only after the United Nations secretary General Perez De Cuellar said that there was no hope of peace in the Gulf.

He said India was in contact with Iranian and Chinese leadership and that he had also written to Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and American President George Bush.

On the immediate impact of the Gulf war on the Indian economy Chandra Shekhar said it had not been affected so far because the oil prices have not gone up beyond expectations.
