NEW DELHI: Indian premier Chandra Shekhar has expressed keenness to resolve the Kashmir tangle at the earliest through concerted efforts and to ensure that the Kashmiris are not further alienated from the national mainstream The premier who held a marathon three and half hour meeting with Kashmiri leaders on Jan 1 firmly stated that no quarter would given to secessionism and the Kashmir problem would be resolved within the constitutional framework.

The consultations between the premier and the state leaders including former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah former union ministers Dr Karan Singh and Syed Mir Qasim as also the state Congress-I and national conference leaders aim at a consensus for framing a new Kashmir policy.

The leaders apprised the Premier of the growing disenchantment of the public with the militants and insisted on resumption of political activity in the state

Some of the state leaders present at the dinner meeting also pleaded for appointing a political advisor in Jammu and Kashmir. Such an appointee might have a better chance of talking to the militants now sending feelers they said.
