NEW DELHE: On Aug.27, the Supreme Court of India ordered the immediate closing of 212 factories near the Taj Mahal because they had failed to meet demands to install pollution control devices. Sulfur fumes from foundries and smoke from private generators near the city of Agra have dulled the white marble of the 17th century mausoleum. Air samples taken there were found to contain as much as eight times the permissible quantities of suspended particles.
