NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister PK Mahanta has been invited to Delhi to frame an action plan to meet the threat posed by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), home minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said here.

The home minister said that the federal government was very serious in dealing with the ULFA threat.

The home minister, in his opening remarks, spoke of violence in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and the influx of refugees into Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka.

He said no quarter would be given to “subversives” as there could be no compromise on the unity and integrity of the nation. He said when the country was fighting abetment from across the border, it was necessary that communal harmony and peace be maintained at all costs in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

Minister of state for home Subodh Kant Sahay speaking on the issue, said that the concerned parties had committed themselves not to indulge in provocative wall writings or slogan shouting’s. Recounting his talks with the Hindu and Muslim delegations Mr Sahay pointed out that both the parties had agreed to continue the discussion.

Regarding the situation in Tamil Nadu following the influx of refugees from Sri Lanka, Mufti Sayeed said a special task force had been trained and deployed in the coastal belt to tackle smugglers and those conniving with Sri Lankan militants. Forty militants had been detained so far, he said. According to an official hand out, some members at the meeting suggested that a joint appeal on behalf of the committee should be made to maintain peace and communal harmony on the Ram Janam Bhoomi Babri Masjid issue. Members spoke on the issue at length with some welcoming the prime minister’s statement about government’s resolve to abide by the court verdict on the issue.
