CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Human Rights Organisation today demanded the immediate release of ;20yrold Lakhwinder Singh of Dera Baba Nanak who has been illegally detained by the police at Batala since Sept 4.
Maj Gen Narinder Singh (Retd) Vice Chairman of the organisation, said Mr Mehar Singh, a poor farmer and father of Lakhwinder Singh, had sent copies of representations to the Prime Minister and Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana. High Court demanding immediate release of his “innocent” son.
The police, he alleged, was demanding a huge sum for his release. Since he had suffered huge losses in the 1988 floods, he was unable to meet the demand of the police. As a result, he alleged, he was being harassed.
