WASHINGTON (PTI): President Bush, in a memorandum to the secretaries of State and Defence, has authorized the drawing down of five million dollars from the defence budget to provide disaster assistance to Pakistan.
Bush says in a presidential determination, issued from Newark, New Jersey, during a campaign stop on September 30:
I hereby determine that it is in the national interest of the United States to drawdown defence articles from the stocks of the Department of Defence, Defence services of the Department of Defence, and military education and training, for the purpose of providing disaster assistance in Pakistan.
“Therefore, I hereby authorize the furnishing of up to five million dollars of such Defence articles from the stocks of the Department of Defence, Defence services of the Department of Defence, and military education and training, for the purpose and under the authorities of the act.
The Acting Secretary of State is authorized and directed to report his determination to the Congress and arrange for its publication in the federal register.”
