PUNE: India’s defence minister Sharad Pawar Saturday called for redefining the Indian approach towards the United States in the changed global scenario
Pawar said there was a need to take a basic decision about our overall approach towards the USA. “After the recent upheavals in the Soviet Union we simply cannot ignore the fact that now the USA is the only superpower” he said.
In this connection Pawar said Indian army chief General Suneet Rodriguez who recently visited the USA and held talks with his American counterpart had submitted a report containing suggestions about Indo-US cooperation in the defence sector.
He however refused to elaborate saying he had not fully gone into the report.
Pawar described as “serious” the recent border clash between India and Pakistani troops across the line of control in the Kashmir valley but ruled out any preemptive action by India that might result in further escalating the situation
He said after deployment of the army in Assam there was an “improvement” in the situation in the rebel-infested areas. The army was receiving “overwhelming” public support to operation “Rhino” which was lacking at the time of operation “Bajrang” last year.
