NEW DELHE: The first session of the ninth Lok Sabha (lower house) of the Parliament has been convened on December 18 and is likely to continue till December 29. A nine day session of Rajya Sabha (upper house) will also begin from December 20.

According to a Lok Sabha secretariat release the President has summoned the House and separate notices had been sent to the newly elected members. A Rajya Sabha secretariat release said the session is likely to continue till December 29.

Apart from oath taking by members and the election of the speaker and the deputy speaker, the most important official business during the eleven day session will be the taking of vote of confidence by government proving its majority.

The President, while inviting VP Singh to form his government, had directed him to prove the government’s majority within 30 days on assumption of office as prime minister.

The government had also announced its intention to introduce Lok Pal (ombudsman) bill to tackle corruption and extension of the constitution provision of reservation for scheduled castes and schedules tribes by 10 years in the first session itself.
