CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police has again come under cloud With the Sangrur Bar Association alleging that one of its members Mr. Sukhwinder Singh Bhatt was picked up by the Sangrur Police ‘on May 12 when he was returning to his village from work. Lawyers have from time to time become targets of the Punjab Police early December 1991 Ranbir Singh Mansahia was kidnapped by the Punjab Police from Bathinda. The police simply denied any Knowledge about his whereabouts. His wife and two minor children are still awaiting his return The Bathinda Bar? Association even the High Court Bar Association struck work for two days.

The second target of the Punjab police was Jagwinder Singh (25) who was picked up from Kapurthala in August 1992 This time the Kapurthala Bar Association went on strike for two months. ‘When the matter was brought to the high court the Punjab Police completely denied the alleged kidnapping. The aged parents of Jagwinder Singh are still hopeful of his return

On January 23, 1993 a lawyer from Ropar Kulwant Singh (27) was allegedly summoned 16 the police station for securing the release of a woman belonging to his village. The lawyer took his wife Baljit Kaur and one-year-old held along with him little realizing that he was not going to return at all. ‘The disappearance of the lawyer and his family caused a Mutter in the legal fraternity of Punjab Haryana and Chandigarh All bar associations of Punjab and Haryana including the High Court bar remained on strike for more than two months Kulwant Singh and his family earned the wrath of the Punjab Police allegedly for defending militants. ‘The latest victim Mr. Bhatti has become a police target for allegedly defending certain militants in court. He has a wife two minor daughters and a minor son and has been an active member of the Sangrur Bar. The Bar has been on strike for the past one week.
