BATHINDA: A group of Sarpanches (village local government heads) and Panches (the members of the village government) are missing after an armed police patty lead by Deputy Superintendent of Police Baldev Singh took them away as they were preparing to leave for Chandigarh.
The Panches and Sarpanches had drafted a memorandum to acquaint Punjab Governor S.S. Ray about excesses against Harijans, the so called untouchables, by the police.
Spirited Away
Bakthawar Singh Dhillon a CPI activist who was with the Sarpanches told newsmen that he the police party just spirited them away.
He contacted a local politician Ved Prakash Gupta, and both of them met the Deputy Commissioner Darbara Singh and the Superintendent of Police (Detective) MPS. Gill.
Gill expressed his helplessness in tracing the Panches and Sarpanches.
