CHANDIGARH: Panchayat elections in Punjab would be held next January.
A Punjab Government spokesman here said elections would be held by January 26. A notification under Section 95A of the Punjab Gram Panchayat Act 1952 would be issued on December 9.
The present term of panchayats expired on October 10. However, the present term of panches and sarpanches would continue till the newly elected panchas and sarpanches take oath.
The spokesman said elections to panchayat samitis and zilla parishads would begin with the notification on December 24, Elections to panchayat samitis would be completed by March 13 next and those to the zilla parishads are proposed to be completed by April 30.
There are 10,953 panchayats for 12.343 villages in the state. The number of panchas varies from four to 10 depending upon the population of the village. For population below 1000 the number is five and for population 2001 to 3000 the number of panches is six and so on.
