CHANDIGARH: Elections to Panchayat in Pun jab were completed this week. There was good turnout of voters despite severe cold. The Panthic committee and other Sikh groups had asked voters to join the fray and elect representable with ant repression record. This aim was achieved at most places although the Indian stale arrested a few candidates to frustrate the aim in respect of a few thousand villages.
Thus the Punjab Panchayat poll has been a mixed affair. At most places Sikh groups succeeded in sending their representatives but al many places the police succeeded in returning their “cats.” At many other places, unattached persons were elected.
There were numerous complaints of regularizes in the elections. Important Sikh group leaders even brought this fact to the notice of the visiting U.S. envoy during his meeting with them at Chandigarh.
