ISLAMABAD Reuter: Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Khan Junejo pledged to work for self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir State which is disputed by Pakistan and India
He told a rally at Muzaffarabad capital of the Pakistan administered sector of the former princely Himalayan state that India Pakistan and the United Nations were all committed to what he called the birthright of Kashmiris the official APP news agency reported.
Two of three wars fought between the two neighbours since independence in 1947 have been fought over Kashmir. Two thirds “of the state is controlled by India and the rest by Pakistan.
Junejo who began a two day visit to the territory called Azad (free) Kashmir said he would like to assure Kashmiris that they would be able to choose their destiny through a free vote (ON) whether to join Pakistan or India APP reported.
India claims the whole of Kashmir but Islamabad thinks Kashmiris who are mostly Moslems must decide in a U.N. supervised plebiscite whether to join Islamic Pakistan or the Hindu Majority India
Azad Kashmir officials last month reported an increase in Indian violations of a military control line in the state.
Junejo said Pakistan was honour bound to have the Kashmir dispute resolved in accordance with the U.N resolution calling for a plebiscite in the state.
He accused India of going back on its promise to honour the UN. Resolutions and. said “We will fulfill our promise to our Kashmiri brethren.”
