ISLAMABAD (PTI): Lt. General Abdul Waheed Kakar was Jan.12 appointed Pakistan’s 11th army chief by president Ghulam Ishaq Khan, an official announcement said.
Gen Kakar, who had been promoted to the rank of a full general, was the commander of the 12th corps, based in the Baluchistan capital of Quetta.
“In exercise of power under article 243 (2) (c) of the constitution, the president has, in his discretion, appointed Lt Gen Abdul Waheed as chief of army staff with immediate effect in the rank of full general,” the announcement said.
A Pathan, Gen Kakar superseded several serving Lt Generals including Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen Javed Nasir, Lahore corps commander Lt Gen Muhammad Ashraf, commandant of the National Defense College Lt Gen Rehm Dil Bhatti, and chief of General Staff Lt Gen Farrukh Khan. The powerful post of the army chief fell vacant following the death of Gen Asif Nawaz Janjua on Jan.8 when the 56yearold general had a massive heart attack.
