BELJING: The Pakistani foreign secretary, General Akram Zaki, Wednesday held talks with Chinese leaders a week before Premier Li Peng’s visit to India.

Zaki, who arrived here on Tuesday as special envoy of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, exchanged views with vice-foreign minister Xu Dunxin on “issues related to the five-nation consultations On nuclear non-proliferation in south Asia and bilateral relations”. Zaki, former ambassador to China, also handed over a letter from Sharif to Li, Xinhua said but did not disclose details.

Li reportedly expressed satisfaction with the expansion of ties with Pakistan, adding that “the Chinese government’s unswerving policy is to continue strengthening Sino-Pakistan relations”.

The Chinese premier also referred to president Yang Shangkun’s recent visit to Pakistan, nothing that it made “important contributions to further expansion of bilateral ties”.
