CHANDIGARH India: Over two thousand young men gherao a police station near Batala. They were demanding the arrest of the police officer in charge Of the police station for the death of S. Kulwant Singh 30 in police custody. The protesters included widow of Kulwant Singh and his five year old son. The gherao Continued throughout the day. District Magistrate of Gurdaspur S. Gurdev Singh Mann and SP. Mr. Kulwant Singh ordered registration of case under section 302 against the police officer. After these orders the gheraod was lifted.
According to local sources S. Kulwant Singh was brought to the police station for interrogation where he died as a result of extreme torture.
