ANANDPUR SAHIB: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Gurcharan Singh Tohra, has said the main agenda of the Akali Dal after achieving complete unity would be to oust the Beant Singh government which was reeking with corruption and working against the interests of the people in the state.
Addressing a massive Akali conference on the second day of the Hola Mohalla here, he said the unity of the Akalis had baffled the Congress and it was conspiring to divide the Akali vote bank. He said the decision of the Bharti Kisan Union led by Ajmer Singh Lakhowal to jump into the electoral arena was part of the Congress conspiracy on the eve of the Akali unity. Cautioning the people against the designs of the Congress and the BKU, he said the Akalis were the real protagonists of the farmers and went to the extent of saying that the two were synonymous.
He gave a call for complete panthic unity followed by the unit of the Punjabis the Beant Singh government. He said the new organizational structure of the united Akali Dal would be announced on April 14 at Damdama Sahib.
Parkash Singh Badal made himself conspicuous by his absence despite the invitation extended to him by Tohra. He deputed his faction leader, Kuldip Singh Wadala, to represent him. Tohra had invited Badal even though it was decided at the February 22 meeting of the Amritsar and Badal factions at Akal Takht that this conference would be mainly the Amritsar faction show.
