A turban worn by a Jackson Arkansas man saved him from a life threatening injury Monday night when he interrupted three men robbing the convenience store where he worked.
Amarjit Singh, 45, of Oakley Street was shot in the right shoulder and the head by one of the three robbers who entered the Big Value Food Store at 3900 Medgar Evers Blvd about 10 pm Monday.
Kaurrekhi was shot after he walked into the front of the store and found three robbers one of whom was holding a gun to the head of his wife at the cash register, police said
Calvin Tucker, 17, of 3728 Cromwell Street, was charged with armed robbery, police said. Another suspect was in custody late
Monday. Police are seeking the third suspect.
The suspect at large was the triggerman in the robbery, police said.
Rekhi was in stable condition at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center.
Fragments of a small caliber bullet were found in Rekhi’s turban.
“He was real lucky. His turban saved him,” said police officer Larry Harper.
Rekhi came to the United States about three years ago from India.
Rekhi’s wife, whose name was not released, helped police make arrests, because she recognized the robbers, Harper said.
“She’s had problems with them before,” he said. The robbers entered the store wearing beige ski masks on their heads and pulled them over their faces once inside, Harper said.
One pointed a small caliber gun at the woman’s head and asked for money, the officer said. When she told them there was none, the gunman fired two shots at the ceiling.
Rekhi came from the back of the store. The gunmen fired at him twice and fled the store on foot with the other robbers.
Police found Tucker hiding in a closet at a Hollywood Avenue house about 10:30 pm. The other suspects fled through a window of the house but one was caught, Harper said.
Police were unsure whether any money was taken from the store.
