MADRAS(PTI): Opposition MLAs in Tamil Nadu state assembly, continuing their boycott for the second day April 23, met the governor and urged him to take ‘appropriate action’ to ensure the rule of law in the state,
The delegation of nearly 60 members of legislative assembly, belonging to the Congress (1), DMK, CPI, CPI(M), PMK and MGRADMK, submitted a joint memorandum highlighting the fact that the AIADMK government was “not functioning in accordance with the constitution,’ the delegation leader, S.R.Balasubramaniam told re porters.
The opposition parties would continue the boycott of the state assembly as their MLAs had no protection inside and outside the assembly, were not allowed freedom of speech and expression, and were prevented from dis charging their constitutional du ties, he added,
Balasubramaniam said they informed the governor that opposition MLAs were being harassed, abused and physically assaulted by ruling AIADMK members and their supporters inside and outside the assembly.
Over 50 opposition members of the state legislative assembly in Tamil Nadu were arrested Wednesday when they attempted to block road traffic after they were evicted from the house for disorderly conduct.
The opposition members, from Congress-1 and the Left parties, had been on an indefinite sit in since Tuesday in the house to protest against an AIADMK member’s derogatory remark on a MRGADMK member, Thirunavukkarasu.
