AMRITSAR: On a pleasant evening in early May 1989, Amritsar CID men were caught and exposed for their nefarious activities in killing innocent people. A serving central reserve police officer on leave brought his sister and her son lieutenant in the army to the posh, locality (Lawrence Road) for enjoyment and pleasure. While this officer and his sister were waiting in their new maruti car and the young army officer was busy in purchases, a maruti van occupied by four burly Sikhs hit the car from: behind. As a result of the violent impact the officer and his sister in the car were injured. The crude act attracted a lot of people who condemned it. Army officer also questioned them and tried to grab one of them who came out of the van. On this all the four Sikhs wearing long “kurtas” (long shirts worn by devout Sikhs) stepped out of the van, whipped out sten guns. and AK 47 guns and kept the public and army officer at bay. They also threatened to shoot if any one advanced any further, In the meantime CRPF officer sitting in the car managed to muster help from a close by CRP post. A dozen. men of CRP on arrival demanded a surrender on the point of gun. This was promptly obeyed. Once disarmed CRPF men started belabouring them. At that juncture all four flashed their identity cards and asked the CRP men to stop beating them. All the four came out to be officers of the local criminal investigation department. They claimed to be on official duty and returned from a secret mission conducted under the orders of high ups. When questioned as to why they were drunk while on duty, they replied in unison, “how can: you kill innocent people without being drunk?” The myth was exploded. Meanwhile the news came that six Hindus were shot dead in the area of police station Jandiala guru. Soon after several officers of the CID rushed to the site rescued their men and hushed up the matter quickly from the press as well as from the public. The CRPF officer frustrated) returned to her sisters house cursing his luck and licking his wounds. The damaged. maruti car is still in the village.
