NEW DELHI (PTI): Incidents of arson killings and destruction of Hindu temples in protest against the demolition of the Babri mosque considerably lessened in parts of the Islamic world Dec.9 while the organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) regretted the failure of Indian government to take appropriate measures to protect the shrine.
In a statement at the U.N. the OIC urged the U.N. secretary general Boutros-Ghali to use his moral and political authority to ensure safety of Muslims in India.
The OIC has favored rising of the issue at the next session of OIC commission on the human rights in Geneva while Pakistan has suggested tabling a joint resolution in the current session of the assembly PTI correspondent from New York reported.
The OIC also urged Muslims to exercise restraint to avoid further deterioration of the situation as tolerance and respect for all religious beliefs is the salient feature of Islam the statement said.
Later asked by presspersons whether the OIC also condemned the violence in Pakistan and other countries and destruction of Hindu temples following the Babri incident the OIC delegates said they did not consider that at the meeting.
Meanwhile the situation in Pakistan and Bangladesh continued to be tense Wednesday.
The death toll in Pakistan has increased to 37 including seven Hindus and 50 temples have been damaged including four Dec 9.
In Iran markets were closed Wednesday to protest the mosque demolition with the Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati discussing the crisis with Pakistani minister of state for foreign affairs Mohammad Siddique Khan Kanju On telephone calling for exchange of views between leaders and officials of the Muslim countries according to reuter quoting Iranian news agency Iran.
Iran has already urged the Indian government to rebuild the mosque
In Nepal tension prevailed in various districts as reports of the demolition of the Babri mosque and the desecration of Hindu shrines in Pakistan Bangladesh and other places kept pouring into the Himalayan kingdom PTI correspondent reported from Kathmandu.
In Hong Kong there was uneasiness among the Hindu minority after some Muslim youths threatened Hindu shopkeepers in Chungking mansions complex Reuter said.
Leaders of Hong Kong’s South Asian communities were busy in their endeavors to bring back the situation to normalcy. Muslim leaders too condemned the incident.
In Dhaka curfew was clamped in southern Bangladesh since Tuesday evening following large-scale looting arson and violence in which four temples were destroyed as security personnel remained mute witnesses PTI correspondent from Dhaka reported.
In Britain more temples came under attack across the country Tuesday night even as British authorities and Hindu and Muslim communities appealed for calm and prepared strategies to prevent any escalation of violence PIT correspondent from London said.
The Muslim and Hindu leaders have been appealing for calm. We don’t want the violence to spread the international Muslims organization said. The hard-line Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) U.K has also appealed to all members of the Hindu community to maintain Calm to ensure peace and stability.
