A veteran sportsman of Punjab, S. Thakur Singh, 88, passed away at Amritsar on June 26, 1987.S. Thakur Singh who was highly respected in the sports circles of the State was the founder secretary of the Punjab Amateur Athletics Association. The first Punjab athletics championship was organized by him on the track of Government Colleze, Ludhiana in 1945 where he was serving as Director of Physical Education. Later he joined Khalsa College, Amnitsar, in a similar capacity. His son, Amarjit “Ambi” was 4 national hockey player of his times. Many international athlete: including Jagmohan Singh and Jag: dey Singh both Olympians owe the existence to late S. Thakur Singh.
