Ranjit Kaur in a petition through Ranjan Lakhanpal said that her husband Piara Singh was picked up by Harinder Pal Singh. SHO of Maha Kalanpolice station, indistrictSangrur on July 31 this year.
Piara Singh was cremated by the police on next day on August 1 without informing the petitioner or any other relative, the petitioner when approached the police authorities to know whereabouts of her husband was told that immediately after arrest of Piara Singh had fits and tied on way to the hospital.
There was great resentment in the public over the death of Piara Singh and public had also geared the police station the same day.
On August 7, a case was registered under Section 304 of IPC against the Harinder Pal Singh, In the postmortem report, it was stated that there were 15 injuries on Piara Singh, and he died because of the injuries caused at the time of interrogation by the police.
Lakhan Pal contended that despite registering a case, the government neither arrested the SHO nor suspended him from service and hence demanded CBI enquiry into the matter.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court last week directed Gaurav Yadav, assistant superintendent of police of ‘Amritsar headquarter, to tendera written apology in the case where two ladies of Amritsar namely Mala and Mini were allegedly paraded in the bazar with blackened faces and were garlanded with shoes.
