Dear G.S. Aulakh:

Referring to your letter of August 1992 to be mailed to President Bush, I would like to express my opinion over some of the subject matter in this letter.

“We stand behind you 100% and fully expect to reap the benefits of your domestic policy and 300,000 Sikh Americans support you as you seek re-election.”

First of all, you cannot (or rather should not) speak for all the Sikhs’ living in this country.

Secondly, in my view, you enjoy the confidence of a majority of the Sikh’s, including me, that you are doing the right job in promoting the Sikh cause as long as you stay out of domestic politics and don’t promote one party candidate over the other. And in this regard, I strongly suggest that you leave this to the local Sangat to decide.

We Sikh’s need the bilateral support of the American Congress and American people. Therefore, we should not publicly or openly support one party candidate over the other. My fear is that we will damage our cause more than we can benefit from this.

On the other hand, by pursuing this policy of partisanship and introducing it in the Gurdwaras and associations we will definitely create a rift and divisiveness amongst the Sangat at the local level, which we cannot allow and also cannot afford.

Another point which I want to mention is that it will definitely hurt your fund collections and contributions because, in my view, people will not allow their funds be used in domestic politics by picking one party candidate over the other.

Lastly, I strongly urge you and other Sikh American leaders not to make open appeals to promote one party candidate over the other, rather leave it to the local Sangat. Darshan Singh Virk Dallas, TX
