Punjab Governor has indicated that the Government was considering release of some 800 Sikh young men currently being detained in various jails against which there were no specific charges.
- Harcharan Singh, Delhi Akali Dal Chief, has been released. He was arrested for allegedly making an inflammatory speech.
Home Minister, S. B. Chavan, has said the Central Government was examining the release of Akali leaders, Parkash Singh Badal and S.G.P.C. Chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra.
Rajiv had a special meeting with the opposition leaders to discuss Punjab problem. BJP President Atal Behari Vajpayee, DMKP President Charan Singh and leaders of the CPI and CP(M) attended this meeting.
New Delhi — The Indian government said today it has ‘adequate evidence’? To establish that Union Carbide Corp. was to blame for a December gas leak in Bhopal that killed 2,500 people and injured 200,000.
“There is adequate evidence to establish, in a convincing manner, the culpability of the Union Carbide Corp. of the United States for the Bhopal gas disaster,’’ Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Veerendra Patil said in Parliament.
It was the first time the Indian government had so bluntly blamed the U.S. Company for the accident. The statement followed nearly four months of investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
