NEW DELHI: Man eating lions around the Gir forest sanctuary in ‘western Gujarat state are likely to be shot dead or sent to zoos, under a proposal by wildlife scientists to the state forest department.

The proposal is part of new management strategies devised by scientists at the wildlife institute of India (WII) in Dehra Dun, Uttar Pradesh, to tackle the ongoing lion human conflict in Gir, the world’s last habitat of the Asiatic lion,

Gir’s lion population has grown from less than 20 early this century to over 280 in May 1990. But in the last two years, attacks by lions on humans have claimed 16 lives and caused over 140 injuries.
