BRIDGEWATER NJ: A new chapter of the Sikh Women’s International Organizations was inaugurated here on January 14 and ad hoc office bearers were announced for the body.

Mrs. Parminder Kaur Kharbanda is the President, Mrs. Surinder Kaur the Vice President, Mrs. Manjit Kaur Sandhu the Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Ranjit Kaur the General Secretary, Mrs. Roopinder Kaur Dhillon the Education Coordinator, Mrs. Manjit Kaur Saraon and Mrs. Daljit Kaur Hera will handle public relations.

SWIO was formed on the Baisakhi day in 1985 and is primarily concerned with the human rights especially those of women. The organization held a seminar at Columbia University on the violation of human rights of the Sikhs in India. It has also honored rights activists Madhu Kishwar and Rajni Kothari.

Addressing the gathering at Bridgewater, Dr. Satwant Kaur Dhamoon, and the President of the organization stressed on the role which the body has played in organizing children’s games in New Jersey and stressed on the importance of teaching Punjabi language to the children. “Those who do not know Punjabi are orphans, they don’t know their own heritage,” she said.
