CHANDIGARH: Oct 7 meeting of the representatives of various “backward classes, Some scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes held here on Sunday formed at new organisation “Backward Class and Scheduled Castes Council” and elected Mr Harbhajan Singh Osahan as its president.
Mr Osahan said that the council would watch the interests of members of the backward classes and ‘Scheduled Castes. The council condemned the high castes for opposing the new reservation policy. Demanding implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations. Mr Osahan said that the population of the high castes in this country was 15% but they were having 85% of the govt jobs, business and trade. He demanded immediate promotions for members of the backward classes in govt depts.’ to clear the backlog.
The council strongly condemned the “hooliganism” during the anti-reservation agitation. It demanded action against all those who had indulged in looting and burning of property in Chandigarh. Mr Osahan demanded that some officers who had been conniving with the antireservationists should be replaced with officers from Scheduled Castes and backward classes.
The meeting appealed to the misguided youth the country not to resort to self-immolation and also not use “derogatory” language against members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
The other office bearers of the council are Mr Hai Shabir Ahmed vice president, Mr Santrash Rahi general secretary, Mr Lehari Singh Organising secretary and Mr Balbir ‘Singh cashier.
