RAWALPINDI: Mian Nawaz Sharif, 41, was swom in as Prime Minister of Pakistan at an impressive ceremony by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on Tuesday afternoon.
Mian Sharif was earlier elected leader of the National Assembly by securing 153 votes as against 39 polled by his opponent, Mr Mohammed Khan of Benazir Bhutto’s party.
Mian Nawaz Sharif was born at Lahore in 1959. He did his law from the Law College, Lahore. He belongs to a family of industrialists. He served for nine years in the West Punjab provincial government first as Finance Minister and later as Chief Minister.
Mian Nawaz Sharif in a statement pledged his support to the people of India held Kashmir in their struggle for liberation.
Meanwhile, the ruling Islamic Jamhuri Ittehad parliamentary party in a resolution passed on Tuesday condemned the “Hindu extremists” of India for desecrating the Babri mosque at Ayodhia and said that the actions of the extremists had hurt the feelings of Muslims all over the world including the Muslims of Pakistan. The meeting expressed solidarity with the Indian Muslims.
Prime Minister V.P. Singh in a message to Mian Sharif congratulated him on assuming the office of Prime Minister.
