SUDBURY, ONTARIO, REUTER — Six foreign athletes — five east Europeans and an African — who attended the World Junior Athletics Championship last weekend have asked to remain in Canada, immigration authorities said on Wednesday.
The athletes, four from Poland, one from Ghana and one from Romania, will be given an immigration hearing next week where they will have a chance to apply for refugee status, a government immigration official said.
“These are kids, they’re not criminal types,” said immigration spokesman Denis Boulanger. “So if someone is willing to take care of them, then fine.”
BANGKOK, REUTER — Thailand is to host the Asian clubs soccer championship here early next month, football association of Thailand secretary Vichit Ketkaew said on Wednesday.
“We received a telex from the Asian Football Confederation Secretary General Peter Vellapan of Malaysia proposing Bangkok as the venue. We have accepted,” Vichit said.
Thailand recently hosted the group five qualifying round between five clubs and the tournament drew crowds averaging 20,000 per day.
