KATHMANDU Jan. 18, Reuter: Leaders of Nepal’s outlawed Congress Party denied on Monday reports they planned to begin a campaign against the government’s no party political system.

The Party, banned in 1960 but tolerated by the government as an unofficial opposition, had no plans to change its national reconciliation policy, said a high level party source.

Local newspapers have reported that the party planned to repudiate its reconciliation policy and launch an antigovernment campaign in the next few weeks.

But the Congress source said although Nepal’s controversial panchayat system would be reviewed at a party meeting next month “there is no alternative to this policy at the moment”.

Under the panchayat system, parties are banned and individuals standing for election to the 140seat national panchayat are forbidden to declare a party affiliation.
