BOMBAY: In a surprise move, the Opposition Congress has fallen in line with the ruling Shiv Sena BJP alliance in favoring the renaming of Bombay as Mumbai following the State Government’s decision 10 go ahead with it, without waiting for the Central clearance.
Bombay Regional Congress Committee president Murli Deora, MP in a letter to Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, has urged the Center to formalize this “popular wish” of the people of Maharashtra with an official sanction immediately.
Deora said that granting sanction to the renaming would amount to a gesture of magnanimity on the part of the Center.
