COLOMBO (PTI): A senior Sri Lankan opposition Member of Parliament, Lakshman Jayakodi, has reportedly urged the country’s auditor general to probe into the government’s assistance to the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam from April 1989 to June 1990.

This was the period when the two sides had suspended hostilities and begun talks.

Ina letter to the auditor general, Jayakodi of the Sri Lanka freedom party (SLFP) said the government had admitted in parliament that its security forces ‘shared’ military equipment with the LTTE, the private newspaper ‘The Island’ reported Friday.

Jayakodi was not immediately available for comments.

The newspaper said the SLFP MP wanted the auditor general to look into the extent of weapons, ammunition and vehicles, among other things, shared by the military with the LTTE rebels. Jayakodi said the question remained whether the government funds were used to supply weapons, ammunition, vehicles and money to the ltte that is waging war against the government for a Tamil homeland,
