NEW DELHI: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Saturday announced the intention of his govt to arm itself with extraordinary powers to deal with what he called “the threat to the country’s integrity and sovereignty”.

In a broadcast over TV and radio the Pakistan prime minister said he intended to amend the country’s constitution so that the govt could resume emergency powers.

Sharif said Pakistan was facing grave dangers due to the counting law and order problem Sharif sought the help of the Opposition peoples’ party as well as the govt in the Pakistan national assembly for amending the constitution accordingly.

He, however, made it clear that the country would not resort to extra constitutional means or opt for a national govt.

According to the radio Sharif said the govt would like to arm itself with powers to hand out summary public executions to what he called anti-state elements.

 BHOPAL: Senior Rightwing Bhartiya Janata Party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee Saturday appealed to all political parties to desist from a confrontational course with the central govt as the country was passing through a “critical phase”.

“The parties should sink their petty differences and work untidily to help the govt tide over the financial crisis”.

Vajpayee said while addressing a public meeting after inaugurating a college building and a bus stand in Bairasia about 40 kms from here.

He exhorted the people to fully participate in the developmental process and not to completely depend on the govt for it.
