OTTAWA: The rapidly developing crescent of land that sweeps across the north of Metro from ‘Oshawa to Mississauga should get six more scats in the House of Commons a federal commission Says.
Riding boundaries are redrawn across the country to take into account population shifts found in the census conducted every 10 years.
The complicated national for mula used dictates that Ontario Pets a Net increase of four seals as the Commons grows to 301 from 295 seats. The other two new seats will be in British Columbia.
Under its proposals;
*Durham would get one more seat for a total of four.
York where population doubled between the census of 1981 and that of 1991 would get two new seats for a total of five.
*The Peel-Halton area would get three new seats for a total of 10
Metro Toronto would lose one of its 23 MPs the recommendation would eliminate Don Valley North riding with most of its territory transferred to Don Valley East
There would be other boundary changes in Metro but Etobicoke and Scarborough would retain their three and five MPs respectively.
