NEW DELHI: In a blatant violation of law, some local MLAS, both of Congress and BJP, have diverted several lakhs of rupees from the municipal fund for construction and repair of temples in several parts of the Capital, sources in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said.

An on the spot survey in East and North Delhi revealed that such constructions are on at a feverish pace. Two temples of Mata Vaishno Devi and Shiva are under construction at Dilshad Garden, East Delhi.

A huge wall is being constructed around a Balmiki temple at Trilokpuri and another temple in the North Campus premises of the Delhi University is fast coming up.

All these temples are being constructed on Government land. “It is no longer surprising to see temples coming up on Government land, But what is absolutely shocking is that the MLAs have been playing up religious sentiments by spending lakhs of rupees from the ‘Plan Fund’ of the MCD ‘on constructing temples,” a senior municipal official said.

The Delhi Government had allowed Rs 1 crore to be taken up in  each MLA more or less, had approved it with small modifications.
