By A Staff Reporter NEW YORK: Addressing a congregation at Sikh Cultural Society Dr. Madanjit Kaur a Sikh scholar stated that the reports in Indian media were one rider and did not represent the true picture of events in Punjab.

The concept of dual sovereignty of Miri Piri which was given to the Sikhs by the Gurus was fundamental and anyone who said he didn’t believe in Miri Piri, could not be a Sikh. Merely keeping long hair did not make anyone a Sikh, even Mahesh Yogi has long hair, she added.

Referring to the confusion and controversy about the Akal Takhat jathedar, she said that Sikh institutions were being destroyed by such controversies and their destruction would be calamitous. Dr. Madanjit Kaur stressed that the Sikhs should unite and not spend too much time in previous disputes amongst various groups.

Later, S. Jagjit Singh Mangat, President of Sikh Cultural Society, Richmond Hill bestowed a siropa to Dr. Madanjit Kaur, on August 20 at the end of her tour of the United States where she addressed a number of seminars and congregations.

Dr. Madanjit Kaur is the head of department of Guru Nanak Studies, at Guru Nanak Dev University, and had been sponsored by the SCS.

Earlier, she had presented a paper on Sikh Human Rights in the 15th and 16th centuries at Detroit. She spoke on contribution and achievements of Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation in Washington D.C., and presented her paper on Sikh Human Rights at International House, New York.
