The birth centenary of Punjabi writer Sardar Gur Bakhsh Singh Preet Lari was celebrated at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University a Michigan in Ann Arbor on Sept.

Gur Bakhsh Singh was graduated from Michigan in 1922 with a civil ‘engineering degree, According to one of his teachers, Prof. Henry E. Riggs, he was one of the most brilliant students.

He later settled in Punjab, wrote more than 60 books and edited a Prominent monthly, Preet Lari, which has been in continuous publication since 1933.

The commemoration was organized by Dr. Pashaura Singh. Prof. Hemalata C. Dandekar, director of the Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies, welcomed the speakers. She ex tended a warm greeting to Urmila Anand, the writer’s daughter; Jagjit Singh Anand, her husband who is editor of Nawan Zaman and a former Rajya Sabha member, and Sukirat Singh Anand, their son.

Urmila Anand was given a certificate by Helen A. Peters, assistant executive director of the Michigan Alumni Association. The presentation was followed by a colorful Punjabi Kavi Darbar, in which nine poets from Ontario, Canada, and two from the local area took part.(IA 10/13/95).
