NEW DELHI: Three members of parliament belonging to the National Conference Sunday urged the President to recall Jagmohan, the newly appointed governor of the state, accusing him of unleashing “unprecedented repression” in the valley.

The MPs -Saifuddin Soz, Piyare Lal Handoo and Mohammad Shafi Bhat -met the president in the evening and apprised him of the latest “critical” situation in the valley.

They said a large number of people had been killed in police firing during the combing and search operation conducted by Para military forces since Saturday night.

In a statement the MPS said Venkataraman had assured them that he would discuss the matter with VP Singh.

Ina memorandum to the President, they said “Kashmir needed in a healing touch at the present juncture but the central government acted in the wrong direction. The appointment of Jagmohan has further alienated the people of Kashmir and the central government is squarely responsible for this impasse.”
