Lome, Togo: French and German mediators dodged barricades of smoking tries and burned-out vehicles on their way to the airport and out of the West African country of Togo after police fired on prodemocracy demonstrators, reportedly killing 20 people.

The European officials, who reached the airport by a back road, had arrived Jan.24 to mediate between President General Gnassingbe Eyadema and opponents who want to end his 26 years of military mule. Prodemocracy groups accuse France of continuing to support Eyadema.
