NEW DELHI: Over 200,000 cases were pending in India’s Supreme Court and 176,100 cases in high courts in the country till December 1989.
According to the annual report of law and justice ministry for 1989-90 of the 52,138 cases instituted in the Supreme Court during 1989, 48,118 cases were disposed of. In the High Coutts, 8,61,030 cases were filed of which 7,15,025 were disposed of.
The report said the ministry received 17,51 references for advice on various aspects of law including legislative proposals from various ministries and central government departments during 1989,
The solicitor general of India dealth with 497 references, including a number of international agreements, relating to convincing.
He also dealt with 256 references relating to house building loans to central government employees, the report said.
Besides, a large number of parliament questions and private member’s bills including those which were handled by the law minister in parliament were processed by the department.
