AMRITSAR: The Sikh Akali party president Simranjit Singh Mann the president of the body in charge of the maintenance of Sikh shrines (SGPC) Baldev Singh Sibia Akali Party (Mann) general secretary Ram Singh and several other party leaders were released on Sunday evening after a day-long detention.

They were rounded up in the morning from outside Tam Taran town as they tried to force their way to village Sangha a few kms from Tarn Taran to participate in the protest rally and Bhog (prayers for the soul of the departed) ceremony of Baba Kabul Singh and six other Karseva (voluntary service) personnel killed in an encounter with security force on Sunday last.

The police termed them as militants. The Akali party and the people at large knew them to be innocent religious people.

Police sources said Mann and other Akali leaders were kept at the Rasulpur rest house five kms from Taran town.
