CHANDIGARH: The Akali Dal faction headed by the Smranjit Singh Mann is understood to have faxed a request to the UN secretary-general Dr. Bhutros Bhutros Ghali seeking an appointment with him during his visit to India later this month.
Party sources said that they intended to submit a memorandum to Dr. Ghali seeking UN intervention to conduct a plebiscite among Sikhs in Punjab The source said that the memorandum would highlight the alleged reign of repression and policy of discrimination perused by the government against the Sikhs in Punjab.
It was learned that the Akali Dal (Mann) decided to get in touch with the UN secretary-general directly after the UN office in Delhi.
