LONDON: Premier John Major has hailed his recent visit to India as a business success for Britain which may earn 20,000 jobs for the country.

Major told the House of Commons during question hour that the contract signed by British companies during his visit to India were worth billions of pounds and may help in creating 20,000 jobs in Britain. The visit will significantly help in providing opportunities for future business, he said in reply to a question.

Speaking at a dinner in Scotland at the weekend, Major said “during the last week, I have been looking to the future looking for trade, looking for exports. Looking for property, looking for jobs.”

He said “that was why I took with me to India the most prestigious group of businessmen ever to accompany a British Prime Minister abroad.” “While we were there significant contracts were signed a pounds 100 million supply contract for British Gas, and a pounds 140 million power transmission contract for GEC Alsthom, Even more important, we opened up export opportunities for the future. We establish a new rapport with the Indian Government and the Indian business community that will bear rich fruit in trade, investment and jobs,” he said.
