NEW DELHI: Madhavan, the CBI joint director who was spearheading investigations into the bank scam cases before seeking voluntary retirement is under surveillance by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
The IB has kept a close watch on the activities of the case and even his residence in Saket is under scrutiny, Not only are the incoming visitors closely monitored, but even Madhavan’s telephone is believed to have been tapped.
However this has not deterred visits or phone calls by his friends, neighbors and journalists. Neither has it hampered Madhavan from carrying out his usual activities which include a walk in the park.
The decision to mount surveillance on Madhavan stems from the government’s apprehension that the joint director, known to be an officer of impeachable integrity, may speak of the pressures put on him to slow down the investigations.
In fact the government tried its best to persuade Madhavan to take back his papers. He was offered a compromise deal by R. Kumaramangalam, minister of state for Parliamentary Affairs. This was however turned down by Madhavan.
The government worried that Madhavan would reveal that he was under pressure to go slow once he was summoned by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), is believed to have told the joint director that he would be rehabilitated as additional director if he withdrew his request and continued with the CBI. But he would have to make certain compromises with the investigations.
