LUDHIANA : The Ludhiana unit of the Akali Dal (Amritsar) has split with nearly half of its municipal councilors dissociating themselves from the leadership of Thekedar Surjan Singh and Hira Singh Gabna.
Harbhajan Singh Dang, Anan Singh Cheema, Ravinder Pal Singh Khalsa, Jagdev Singh Gohalwadia and Balwinder Singh Bains told a joint press conference that they had written to the Mayor, Chaudhary Sat Parkash, to treat them as a separate group. They named Dang as their new president, Gohalwadia as vice president and Bains as the group general secretary.
These members declared that they had no faith in the leadership of Thekedar and Gabria in the district party unit. Both these leaders are close supporters of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Gureharin Singh Tohra.
The rebels revealed that they had not been attending meetings of the local party unit for the past six months and announced that they would not take part in is activities in future also.
