COLOMBO: Sri Lankan ground troops with supporting cover from the air force over an LTTE camp in northern Vavuniya on Thursday amidst heavy resistance.
The Porasnkulam camp described as one of the satellite camps located in the northwest of Omanthai junction around their main camp at Pullumodai was overrun Thursday and the forces recovered a large numbers of arms ammunition vehicles including an ambulance in the militant camp.
While three soldiers were killed in the fierce gun battle casualties on the militants’ side were not immediately known though believed to be “quite heavy” a spokesman of the joint operations command here said. However another military source said at least four soldiers were killed and another 20 wounded in Thursday’s battle.
Meanwhile indefinite curfew has been clamped in the Mannar district from Friday morning while curfew was imposed in Vavuniya and Mullaitivu since May 2 where the forces had launched a major offensive against the militants. The offensive in Vavuniya is still on the spokesman said.
